LAWSON. Spotsylvania County VA to NY

Hi folks,

Am trying to track my godmothers family, surnamed Lawson - and make some connections. Have identified the family in 1880 census in NY:

Orangetown, Rockland, New York

Source: FHL Film 1254924 National Archives Film T9-0924 Page 149B

Relation Sex Marr Race Age Birthplace
Robert LAWSON Self M M MU 36 VA

Occ: Gardner Fa: VA Mo: VA
Emma LAWSON Wife F M MU 31 NY

Occ: Keeping House Fa: NY Mo: NY
Emma LAWSON Dau F S MU 10 NY

Fa: NY Mo: NY
William LAWSON Son M S MU 8 NY

Fa: NY Mo: NY
Robert LAWSON Son M S MU 4 NY

Fa: NY Mo: NY
Florence LAWSON Dau F S MU 2 NY

Fa: NY Mo: NY
James LAWSON Son M S MU 1 NY

Fa: NY Mo: NY

Ella mis-spelled as "Emma"

The family is listed as mulatto in 1880, as black in 1900. They are originally from Fredericksburg VA.

In Fredericksburg I found:

LAWSON, JOSEPH
State: VA Year: 1860
County: Spotsylvania County Record Type: Federal Population Schedule
Township: Fredericksburg Page: 339
Database: VA 1860 Federal Census Index

LAWSON, JOSEPH
State: VA Year: 1870
County: Spotsylvania County Record Type: Federal Population Schedule
Township: Fredericksburg Page: 390
Database: VA 1870 Federal Census Index

This family is mulatto, and the only Lawsons of color in Fredericksburg in the 1870 index and in 1860.

My guess is that this is Robert Lawson's brother but can't be sure unless I can find some other type of record for confirmation

Anyone doing research in the county, or with this surname please let me know,

Denise
