Charles Lewis, Rocketts Landing, (Richmond) Virginia
Hello Ms. Wills,
I am contacting you on behalf on CMSS Architects, P.C. I am located in Virginia Beach but we do have a Richmond office and are investigating the history behind Rocketts Landing, a development site of ours. I am researching the local history pertaining to African-Americans and Native Americans. I would like to obtain information encompassing the scope of the nature and effect that blacks and indians had on downtown Richmond, more specifically the riparian areas of Rocketts Landing, Manchester Slave Docks, Lumpkins Jail, Belle Island, Brown's Island, etc.
I was given a copy of your article "Free Persons of Color:Rocketts Landing, Virginia" and wanted to know more information about your ancestor, Charles Lewis; how you are related to him and how did he become such an astute businessman and be successful in landowning during those times.
Also, you made mention of the exhibit that had been on display at the Patrick Henry Building in the Capital Rotunda. I doubt that it is still up, but do you or Melba Myers, the curator, have any documents or items or historical timelines or tidbits left over from this exhibit still? Do you know how I would be able to get in touch with her?
I appreciate any and all assistance in this matter. If you need any further clarification or information from me, then please let me know.
