Lookups - FPOC Loudoun County VA 1850
I now have an almost perfect (nothing in life is perfect) list of FPOC listed in the 1850 census for Loudoun County VA. Many of the listings are NOT picked up by the ancestry.com AIS index, nor does the AIS index tell you the color/race of the person - you have to look at each image.
The index at rootsweb also doesn't list race so you have to wade through the entire text.
Will be compiling an alphbetized master list of surnames ASAP, and will then start on 1860.
If you think you had ancestors who were free in Loudoun in 1850 email me or post here.
Most of the people are NOT listed in the "Registry of Free Negroes" either.
A careful look at the census pages - and you realize that the census taker was sometimes lazy, and didn't bother to write in the race of the person in a family unit - if he had already identified the parents race - too lazy to even put ditto marks.
Am developing two lists - one alphabetical and the other geographical - with names in family groupings - will do a third that looks at potential ex-slave owners - since many families are living with or right next to white people with the same surname which leads to the assumption that these may have been former owners - will try to correlate with wills and estate records.
This is ONLY for Loudoun County VA - it will be quite a while before I get the time to look at neighboring counties.
