Re: NICKENS, Loudoun county VA
In Response To: NICKENS, Loudoun county VA ()

I have no idea if the genealogy of the African-American Nickens family in Ohio is related to the African American Nickens family that originated in Lancaster County, Virginina in the middle to late 1600s.

In his will, John Carter II, (1648?-1690), the owner of Corotoman Plantation, freed his slave variously known as "Black Dick" and Richard Nickens, along with wife of Richard Nickens, named Chriss.
The emancipation of Richard Nickens is well known by researchers of the slave owning Carter of Virginia. I have read quite a bit of data about Richard NIckens. Some claim that he was part Powhaten Indian others claim he was the son of John Carter II and an African slave woman.

In any case, it appears that some descendants of Richard Nickens have compiled a pretty complete genealogy record. I would hesitate to say that the African American Nickens family of Ohio are not descended from Richard & Chriss Nickens.I have 14 pages describing Richard Nicken(s, his emancipation and aome informmation about his descendents if any are interested. My cousin Arlean Hill ArleanHill@aol.com is an athourity on Nickens genealogy.
