Therearesom any John Pettiford it would be hard to tell who he is descended from. My great great grandfather was John Milton Pettiford the son of Edmund Pettiford. Edmund branch of the the family left N.C. around 1854 and came to Ohio and Indiana. That is where most of my relatives still live.
