I've been assisting an elderly family friend who has newman ancestors. I found the family in the 1788 tax roles of Loudoun Co, by 1814 they are in Harrison County where he remained . He supposedly died in Randolph county before 1850. The given names that I've found of the earliest newman's were William , Henry, Jesse and Stacy. By 1840/1850 they begin to be listed as white. prior to this they variously appear as white or as free Colored.

This is my first foray into the free men of color families and I'm seeking soem information on how to establish the ancestry and how to locate records .
