Re: Pagee/Pegee Family
In Response To: Re: Pagee/Pegee Family ()

Hi Paul,

I found the information on the Transcribe Virginia site at the LVA. I usually work on transcribing the documents in the African American Narrative section, which is how I found the documents on Nanny Pegee. Her case is in 9 parts, each about 25 pages long. If you go to the site now, you will find some of the Parts, which are being reviewed, before they are placed at the LVA Website. Of course right now I can't find the exact document that said that David Jones-alias David Pegee bringing his own case. He is mentioned in this one.

The following is Part 8 - Image #24 (of 25).

Know all men by these presents that we John Hook
and James Callaway are held and firmly bound unto
William Cabell Esquire Governor or Chief Magistrate of
the CommonWealth of Virginia
in the penalty of one thousand dollars
to be paid to the sd. [said] Governor or his successors, we bind ourselves
and each of us, our and each of us, our and each of our
heirs, executors, and administrators jointly and severally
firmly by these presents, sealed with our seals, and dated,
this 23d day of April 1808.
The condition of the above obligation is such that
Whereas Nanny Pegee & Caty, Billy, Daniel, Rachel &
Alexander her children; who sued in forma pauperis,
have obtained a Verdict and Judgment in the District
Court held at Franklin Courthouse the 23d day of April
1808, whereby it was found that they are free persons &
not slaves, and it was considered that they recover
against the said John Hook one penny the Damages found
by the Jury and their costs from which Judgment the said
John Hook hath prayed an appeal to the Court of appeals
and the said John Hook hath voluntarily offered to give security
to have David Jones, alias David Pegee, another
child of the said Nanny Pegee & now in the possession of
the said John Hook, & which said David was
not a party to the suit above mentioned, forthcoming
at the next term of this court, to do, and abide by what
the court shall consider & order of and concerning him
in the Premises: Now if the said John Hook shall
produ[c]e to the Court at the next term the body of the
said David Jones, alias David Pegee for the purposes
above mentioned, then the above obligation to be void
else to remain in full force and Virtue John Hook (Seal) James Callaway (Seal)
Signed, Sealed & Delivered in the presence of The Court
Witness C. Tate C.C.
