GIST Settlement Ohio
I am looking for information regarding the genealogy of descendants of the Gist Settlement in Ohio.
I have been researching my 3rd great grandparents, Nancy JONES (1861?-1950 died in Toledo, Ohio) and James Edward ROBINSON (1835-1910 died in Toledo, Ohio). Through Family Search I have found many documents about them in regards to their children and I have (finally) found their death certificates but the informants for the death certificate of Nancy (who was her daughter) did not know her parent's names. The only information I have is that she was from GREENFIELD/HIGHLAND COUNTY/Ohio.
I have never been able to find a marriage certificate/record of the aforementioned but was provided a tip by a helpful person here regarding there being only 2 settlements of color in Highland County, OH - the Gist Settlement and the "Carmel Indians" or "Carmelites." Nancy was listed as a mullato on various census records as were her children. But I have not been able to link her to Carmel Indians as I cannot find anything about her (which is frustrating BTW as I thought this portion of my family would be easier to research due to being free persons of color).
I am trying to find if there are specific locations where I can research ROBINSONS who were descendants of Samuel Gist's freed slaves in Ohio in an effort to see if James Edward ROBINSON is connected to that settlement. His parents were listed as Frank ROBINSON/ROBSON and Becky (unknown surname). This is a long shot as James Edward was said to be from Harrisburg, PA but on different censuses from year to year some information varied about both he and Nancy so I am trying to see if there is a connection with him in Ohio.
Also, any information about Carmel Indians would be appreciated. I found out that JONES was not a common surname of this group but also that they are very hard to trace. I don't know if anyone has any tips regarding doing research on this specific group of free persons of color in Ohio.
