Re: FPOC Community: Ten Mile Creek, Louisiana
In Response To: FPOC Community: Ten Mile Creek, Louisiana ()
The Baton Rouge Daily Advocate also published quite a bit on this matter. I made copies of some of the digitized articles and can send them to anyone who would like.
From reading their articles here's what I was able to make out:
The NO Crescent supported the Know Nothing Party (I believe. This newspaper is not digitized. If I can get to the LSU library, I will have to pull this newspaper manually.) The BR Advocate supported the Democratic ticket.
There was an election in Rapides parish for Sheriff. Voters in the Ten Mile community had been accused of voting while black in 1839 and had be acquitted at that time. The Ten Mil voting community almost uniformly voted Democrat in elections. The Know Nothingers of Rapides parish decided to ressurrect the issue and headed out to Ten Mile armed and ready to take the ballot box and keep the Ten Miler votes from counting.
This did not happen, but indictments were filed against several Ten Milers for illegal voting. They were all found Not Guilty.
The Advocate took the position that the men were not Black. The Crescent took the position that they were from a Free Black community.
It was reported all of the USA in 1856 and 1857 that Louisiana had a population of Free Blacks who voted and editoralized on ad nauseum.
Those of us who do research on Ten Mile and other communities near it know the truth is complicated on this one, even today.
