Re: Proctor Family Tree
In Response To: Re: Proctor Family Tree ()
I found a brief newspaper article about the murder of an "aged colored man" named Thomas Proctor in Charles County, MD, in 1871. Since the article is disturbing, I contacted Terri privately to ask her if she wanted me to email her privately with the article or if she would prefer not to read it at all. To Terri's credit as a researcher, she asked me to post it here, in case there were other people looking for him, too, whom this might be able to help. Of course more research is needed to determine if this is the same Thomas Proctor.
The [Baltimore] Sun
Homicide - On Tuesday afternoon last an aged colored man, named Thomas Proctor, was shot and instantly killed, by Dr. H.H. Bean, at his residence near Centreville. Proctor entered the room where Dr. Bean was, and soon a dispute arose between them, when Bean seized a shot gun and fired at Proctor's head, literally tearing off the entire upper portion of the skull. An inquest was held on Wednesday, by Justice G.C. Barch, and the jury returned a verdict that the deceased came to his death at the hands of H.H. Bean, while laboring under a temporary fit of insanity. Justice Barch afterwards admitted the accused to bail.
