I found that the Spotswood Penman family are descendant from Darby Penman who served in the Revolutionary War in Huston's Mounted Battalion. On July 3, 1797 he bought his wife Jane(who might be the Jean mentioned in the 1810 census) from Anderson Pigg. The next day he emancipated both Jane his son Spotswood Penman. From what I can tell Darby and Jane had at least 3 other children Nancy, Daniel, and Darby. I did find a Pigg in Virginia that is listed as being a Native American surname in a book by Richard L. Haithcock. When I traced the Pigg's back they did originate in Virginia. I've also heard that the Penman's are of Native American descent. Though, I haven't found any record of it.
