Re: Underground Railroad
In Response To: Underground Railroad ()
A great website for information on Levi Coffin and the Levi Coffin House is found at: http://www.waynet.org/levicoffin/default.htm#general
Levi Coffin and the Quaker involvement with the UGRR in this area of eastern Indiana and western Ohio is extremely well documented .. and justified ... However, in my opinion the role of the FPOC such as the Clemens, Bass & other AA families is greatly under-emphasized and under-played. These FPOC families from Longtown were very active and successful in and around Fountain City, formerly Newport, in the early days prior to the arrival of Levi Coffin in Indiana.
This website also has some other very important links to help in the understanding of the UGRR, it's routes, locations, operatives, etc. especially those links under the heading
One link of particular interest is ..... [3,000 names of Underground Railroad "operators" by Wilbur Henry Siebert-Albert Bushnell Hart]. Listed are the names of operators indexed by Name within State/County w/asterisks identifying those of African American Ancestry.
I must note with great pride those African American operators in Champaign, Clark, Hancock & Logan counties of Ohio which includes my ancestors .... Lewis & David Adams; Francis, Lewis & Joseph Reno & Tapley Bray.
Another item of personal pride is the recognition of "The Friends of Freedom (FOF) Ohio/Underground Railroad Association (OURA)" Link. The FOF/OURA is an UGRR research organization that I am a member of. We research the UGRR in Ohio.
Having been born and raised around Lynn, Indiana, I NEVER KNEW of a underground railroad drop off in Fountian City, Ind. Never knew it was there until traveling up US-27, from Richmond, in route to Lynn, and my daughter spotted the (LEVI COFFEY) house right there in Fountian City, what a well kept secrect, or none of my family ever talked about it.
