Re: John Bass Family Bible Records (NC and VA)

Most of the mixed-race Bass family of Virginia lived in Norfolk County with the exception of Jacob Bass (born about 1778) who registered in Petersburg: light brown Mulatto man, short brown hair, born free and raised in Norfolk County.
A John Bass, "son of James," was taxable on his own tithe (over 16) between 1810 and 1817 in Norfolk County. John may have been taxable in someone else's household earlier and not listed separately.
James Bass went to Bedford County, Tennessee, in 1819, and was counted there as a "free colored" head of household in 1830. His son John may have gone with him. There was also a John Bass counted as a "free colored" head of household in Bedford County, Tennessee, in 1830, but the census taker had that John as born before 1776. His children would probably also have been born in Virginia.
