"I have been researching my grandfather's family and the earliest census document I can find them in is 1850. Then when I try to search 1840 I only see records for white persons. Since they were free they wouldn't be listed under the slave census, so where do I look?"

Ans:

Prior to 1850 only head of household (HOH) was listed by name in the census records. If your ancestors were free prior to 1840 the HOH would be listed on page 1 by name and the family structure would be seen on page 2.

Here are examples
1)Lewis Adams (FPOC) in 1820-1830 in Champaign County, Ohio.
2) Charles Allen (FPOC) 1840 in Ross County, Ohio
