Hi Judy, You might also want to check tax records - if free they may have owned some property and be on the tax rolls - I don't know about that specific county, but in Loudoun "free negroes" are listed in a separate section in the back of the tax book. I also found my great great granduncle listed at several sales of property. When estates were sold - either due to a death or insolvency/back taxes owed - folks from the neighborhood came to buy a variety of items - quilts, nails, farm equipment etc, and free folk are listed in some of the Estate accounts. Other records that might have mentioned your folks are things like church records, and store accounts. In Loudoun there is a document from a local store owner - kind of a credit list where folks bought items on credit and paid when they could. Estate reocords from a local county doctor may also mention your family. Become familiar with the white families in the area - see who they might have worked for - even part time.
