Hi Toot,
You know, we talked about this particular thing in class this week....how we've become so programmed to hate our African-ness, and the desire to always want to claim Indian heritages BEFORE the OBVIOUS & predominate heritage. Akhan made a good point yesterday...though a fair percentage of African-Americans do have Indian ancestry, how come we don't see and hear Indians trying to make a connection with us? In most cases, they hadn't. But here we are...seeking to claim everything and everyone that never thought to embrace us as their own. I was told that my great-grandmother was part Cherokee. I don't know if it's true or not. If it is, yes I will acknowledge it as part of my family tree, but I won't claim it without first being proud of my predominate African blood that American society has tried to make me feel shame about.
