I started out with the National Genographic, and then upgraded to the "refined" test for additional markers with FamilyTree DNA.
Of the low resolution matches, there were about 8 mathces for me. For the high resolution markers I had 3 exact matches. But we are exact matches, so there is a common ancestor withing the last 300 years or so that we share.
We have communicated, and proably all share a common ancestor here in the Americas, (we are suspecting that Virginia might be where the common ancestor was.) Our family lines do not intersect within the past 6 generations, so some more challenging research lies ahead to determine who/where that common ancestor might be.
The high resolution matches however I think can be useful, for locating some of those lines that got separated.
It is a journey that continues, without question.
