The question of a surprising appearance of East Asian DNA is not just a situation faced by African Americans but also occurs in the Euro-American population as well. There have been a few theories including that the markers identified as East Asian actually came from Native American people, or that it was through migrations and/or invasions in Europe that these markers were passed on.
The FAQ at Ancestry by DNA do address some of these questions about East Asian DNA results:
...but since DNA ancestry is such a new thing, I haven't seen anything to indicate that anyone knows for sure.
Lisa, your theory could be correct but because the East Asian DNA just seems to show up in so many people, until more research is done, it will be difficult to know for certain.
