Re: DNA Tribes Explanation
In Response To: Re: DNA Tribes Explanation ()

OK........this is a very layman's explanation. I'm sure someone here could give a much better one......but here I go........HVR1 is Hypervariable Region 1, HVR2 is Hypervariable Region 2. The standard mtdna test that you take is an HVR1 (this is the same test that AFrican Ancestry does and that you take with National Geographic, which by the way, FAmily Tree DNA does the testing for.) The HVR1 establishes your haplogroup and with your HVR1 matches you share a recent common ancestor within like 50 generations I think. Not sure on that one. The HVR2 goes deeper and the individuals you match with here you are closer related to, like 25 generations. After you've taken the HVR1, to take the HVR2 is only $75. I'm thinking about doing that before I do the African Ancestry test because I have all the L3b markers, except I also have this weird 16311C mutation. I'm still trying to figure out what that one is. It's listed as a "unique mutation" on the AfricanDNAProject website. Maybe it's that extraterrestrial mutation we were talking about! Hahahaha!!! So I'm thinking it would behoove me to go for the more detailed HVR2 test. Hope that explains it. Smile!
