Re: [SURINAME] Justina Josefina Ellis
In Response To: Re: [SURINAME] Justina Josefina Ellis ()
We know a few things about the early Ellisses. There is a Jan Ellis who was a merchant in Curacao a little bit later (we have found the minutes of an interrogation of him in connection with delivery of goods to a French pirate around 1670), and there are three brothers and one sister (Jan, Daniel, Nathaniel and Jannetje) who emigrated from New Netherland (or New England at that time) to Curacao. Nathaniel was baptized in the Dutch Rerformed Church in Albany New York around 1680. His father was Frerik Ellis, a first name that is specific for the northeast of the Netherlands. The name Ellis or Elles (still found in the Northeast and not at all in any of the major cities)seems to mean "son of Elle", there is an Elle Douwes and a Douwe Elles in baptism registers.
Anyway, I am interested in this new trace: Jan Ellis in New Amsterdam. Could be the same as our Jan. I will not have much time, but it would be good to speak to Jules at some point.
