Catherine, I now have William Scott's obituary that includes his birthplace, death place and date, and his wife's name. Using his wife's name, I found him in a census that also includes a son, named Thomas after William's father. I also found a newspaper article that confirms that William was indeed a first cousin of my great grandfather's. I have been communicating with a descendant of William's older sister (who evidently married in Ohio before the rest of the family moved to Canada). All of my Scott relatives seem to be back in the states by 1880. Because he died before his father, I may not have ever learned of William's existence if you had not found him in the 1861 census.
