Re: Blacks in Canada, 1861
In Response To: Re: Blacks in Canada, 1861 ()

Hi Carol,

I was scrolling through this forum today and came across your post. You may have already discovered this info, but I'll post what I have in case you haven't come across it. Buxton is in Raleigh Township. The only child listed (1861 Census) born prior to 1853 was William F. born about 1840. I did not find Cassius listed in any Canadian records. NOTE: 1881 Census for Raleigh is extremely distorted and much of it can't be read - the 1880 Directory is the final listing I could find for Thomas Scott.

1861 Census of Canada West (Raleigh, Kent, Ontario) - District 3:
THOMAS SCOTT, Shoemaker, born US, E. Methodist, age 45, Married, Indian
UNIS H. SCOTT, born US, E. Methodist, age 24, Married, M(ulatto)
WILLIAM F. SCOTT, Shoemaker, born US, FC, age 21, Single, M(ulatto)
ROBERT SCOTT, born Canada West, E. Methodist, age 4, M(ulatto)

1871 Census of Canada, (Raleigh, Kent, Ontario) - District 2, Division 4:
THOMAS SCOTT, Boot & Shoe Maker, born US, BME, age 55, Married, African
EUNICE H. SCOTT, born US, BME, age 30, Married, English
ROBERT CH. SCOTT, born Ontario, BME, age 13, African
ISABELLA SCOTT, born Ontario, BME, age 10, African
THOMAS E. SCOTT, born Ontario, BME, age 8, African
GEORGE A. SCOTT, born Ontario, BME, age 7, African
MARY LUCY SCOTT, born Ontario, BME, age 3, African

1880 Kent County Direectory, Raleigh Township:
SCOTT, Thomas, fr, 1. 2, etc, Buxton Villiage

Hope this helps,

Catheirne Blount
