Re: WAS NEW CANAAN REAL? BLACK SETTLEMENT IN ONTAR

I hope so, cause I used to live there!! :)
It isn't called New Canaan anymore, it was swallowed up by Essex. There used to be a small general store so I'm told that my mom and family used to walk to in New Canaan, which was just down the road. We lived on Brush Side Road, Essex, Ontario...which was part of New Canaan at one time. The general store was on Gesto Road, just past the train tracks on your way to McGregor! It of course, no longer exists. I know we were told that many slaves excaped to that area, and I believe there may be some grave stones that confirm that, but I don't remember where they are. I can ask my mom though.
Hope this helps.
Trish
