Help if you can.
I am doing family research for my wife. Her gg grandfather Charles Brown slave born 1821 Virginia . There is a story about Charles Brown that has been published in a book , the author does not know origin only that it has been passed down thru time. The story goes that Charles Brown came across the Niagara River to Niagara-on-the-Lake with his two masters who were taking bets on who could stay in the ring with Charles ( a boxer ) for a given period of time. A Mr. Edward P. Ryerse who was there on business approached Charles and informed him that there were Anti - Slave Laws in Canada and if he were to find employment here would be a free man. Charles refused to return home and with threats against him and Mr. Ryerse went to Port Ryerse and worked for Mr. Ryerse who was an officer of her Majesty's Customs and ship owner and businessman in the port. Charles was a ship caulker and also maintained order among the dock workers and schooner crews.
Charles shows up in 1861 Canada Census. He probably came to Canada 1851-1853 .Wife Anna or Annie. Had two sons born in Port Ryerse,John Francis Brown 1854,Theodore Brown 1855.
Our problem is trying to research further back as we do not know where in Virginia he came from or the name of slave owner. Any help would be appreciated.
