I was raised in Detroit and used to go to Windsor for lunch all the time... it's a 5 minute drive across the Detroit River. I think your suspicion is correct and since they probably planned to move back to the states once slavery ended, they wanted all their children to be born in the U.S.

: across the river from where they were living. They must have
: purposely gone back to the United States for the children to be
