Wheary family request
This was originally posted on Yahoo Groups, but I thought it might be of interest to other researchers, so I'm posting the original message along with my response - lbl
Hello all, Hoping someone can help, I am looking for information on David Wheary, an older black gentlemen who disappeared in the fall of 1902 and whose remains where later found in the woods in Frerickton. Leads to any new paper article s
Thanks. Pam
Pam; Did you actually mean FREDERICKTON? If so, then you also mean Frederickton in Newfoundland, right? My first thought was to look at paperofrecord.com, which is a Canada-based company that has placed digital images of archival newspapers online (for a fee, searchable, though the search engine isn't very good). They have a large selection of Canadian newspapers, but none currently available in the timeframe for which you search. The Provincial Archives of Newfoundland and Labrador (http://www.panl.gov.nl.ca/) does NOT do inter-library loans (ILL), so unless you can find a film at the Library and Archives of Canada (LAC) or the Mormon Family History Centers (FHC), you'll have to travel to Newfoundland to do your search. The LAC does do ILLs and their website is fairly easy to search using "Frederickton" as the keyword:
A quick seach of the Mormon site (familysearch.org) revealed no match for the place name "Frederickton," but under the search for Newfoundland, the only newspapers listed don't seem appropriate for your area or time. Other than that, you might want to contact the Family History Society of Newfoundland and Labrador (http://www.fhsnl.ca/) in hopes that one of their members can do a lookup for you. They have some databases available for searches (cemetery headstones, baptisms, marriages, deaths, etc.), for a small fee. Good luck in your search, my friend. And let us know if we can be of further assistance. - Lisa B. Lee, PLCGS
