The Toronto Public Library has a fabulous site called: "Digital Collections". It has digitalized and made searchable historical Toronto Directories from 1837-1880.

I found my great great great grandfather living in Toronto in 1837. I may have even found his wife.

Click go and do a Quick Search for lastname n1 firstname . The n1 means the two words must be next to each other.
