1911 Canadian Census Online Now!!
The Canadian Archives' online research tool, Archivia.net, has posted all of the images from the 1911 Canadian Census. This is a GREAT boon for those of us who have been fighting, for years, to get this information released. Due to recent legislation, the Canadian government has agreed to release each census 92 years later, meaning that the 1921 census will be released in 2013 (I can hardly wait).
Okay, but there's something you need to know. This census, just as with the 1901 census, is indexed ONLY by location, and NOT by surname. If you know the county, district and/or area in which your ancestors were living, you must search by those names, and then view each page to find the names for which you search.
But it's better than nothing, right?
One REALLY interesting thing about the way Archivia has presented these data is that you have the choice to view the images either in PDF format or using MrSid. I've tested both, using a variety of browsers, and in my experience, the PDF version is not only faster, but allows far better viewing and printing options than MrSid. Go figure.
At any rate, I'm sure you'll have hours and hours of fun digging through this census. Let me know if you have any problems or suggestions to share with the others in our forum.
