Thanks so much for this information. I now know about when my grandfather, Walter Mathews names changed to Mathis. I never thought to look for Matthis. This is my family. I knew they lived on a Wells farms in Rose Hill, Duplin County.
Its been said that my grandpa's father was a Henry Wells. Larua Mathews was his mother. He must have been the son of S. B. Wells.
I will definitely print this off and save it. I did find in 1900 census, grandpa Walter was a Mathews. His grandparents were listed as Mathews (Essex and Bessie (Ivy) Mathews.
