WORKMAN ~ Brick Wall Posting

I think I may have hit a brick wall in my research.

I am attempting to locate my Great Grandfather in census records prior to 1900, in the hopes of finding where he was from, who his siblings are and what plantation he may have come from.
His name was Reuben/Renbin Workman/Worddman/Warkman, born abt 1860 - but in 1900 census record it shows him born in 1957. After pouring thru census records, looking at individual men born around his birthday and looking up links to possible relatives, all I feel I have come to is lots of guesses and possibilities. I realize that this research is not an exact science, but I think, before I go with MY best guess I would rather go with someone that has been at this research longer than me (Afrigeneas Researchers).
Specifically, I am interested in finding him in 1860, 1870 or 1880 census records, then maybe I can figure out who his relatives may or may not be and where he may have come from.

1. I was told to try and locate him in the county of his birth - York, SC. - no luck. I look at individual records of men in that county but I don't recall finding any that looked like a match.

2. I was also told to try and find a marriage record for him in SC - no luck. Since Frances would have been 12 y/o in 1870 I pulled up each individual record of men born in 1860 (or so) with a woman 12 y/o in their household, but could not find a link there either.

It is my belief (guess) that he changed his name, but without a random pick I cannot figure out who he may have been before. All of the children listed in his households were born AFTER 1880, so linking a male/female with a child around in 1880 seems impossible. In Philly, where my grandfather moved to until his death, there was a woman named (Aunt) Cynthia McIntosh (born 1880, married to James, son Richard), that the family stated WAS NOT related to us, but I don't know for sure.
On his death certificate he listed David and Emily as his parents - I looked for them individually as well and did not find them either.

The following is census info I have collected:

***Again, I could not locate any of his children from this household either - except my grandfather. I did find Wm McFadden in NY, married to Hattie and Azilee McFadden living as a servant in Hemptead in later census records. I made the assumption that Azilee changed her name from Thames back to McFadden - her mother Rosanna maiden name, around the time she left her mother's household and moved to my greatgrandfathers household. But even with all of that I could not find a connection linking Reuben or Francis to Rosanna as a sibling***
