Re: Beal in VA, NJ or NC
In Response To: Re: Beal in VA, NJ or NC ()
Thank you so much for willing to help. I’m at such a dead end any help is greatly appreciated. Since my program (Family Tree 06) does not export word files I tried to copy his information as a picture file but that didn't work - I'll take any help on this as well.
Here are the highlights and a few other facts…
John Beal, African-American, born around 1872 somewhere in Virginia but I don’t know where. I have focused on Gloucester VA because I have an unconfirmed lead that he may have died in Gloucester (but it could be Gloucester, NJ as his wife, children and father-in-law are found in census, city directories, and school records living in Asbury Park, NJ and the lead thought is was Gloucester, NJ where he was found when he died).
He married Sofia (or Sofie) Motley but I have not been able to find any census records or other records for them living together. In the 1916 city directory for Newark, NJ, Sofia is listed as a widow and living with her father, Cary Motley with her two sons, Wellington C. Beal, born 1909, and James D. Beal, born in 1912. In the 1920 census her sons are found in an orphanage. I contacted the orphanage and they found the records but there is nothing on the father (The records tell me that Sophie placed them in the orphanage in 1919 and took back custody in 1922).
This is where I hit a dead end. I can’t find anything more on John. I have checked for a death record in NJ, NY, and VA for John with no luck. His grandchildren (my father and uncle) have a vague recollection of living for a moment with an aunt, who was the sister of John named “Sadie” who they think was married to a Jackson. I found a 1920 census record in Harlem (where the orphanage was) of a Sofia Beal living a lodger with a Charles and Sadie Jackson... all “B”.
Thanks in advance….
