Whitaker Family

Here is my problem:

Over the past several years I have been tracing the
slaveholding family (Robert Franklin Whitaker) trying
to figure out when and how they acquired their first
enslaved African. Based on my research (deed, tax, and
probate records) from 1820-1880, I have narrowed the
time period to 1836-1840. The first time the family is listed as
owning a slave is in the 1840 tax roll of Bastrop
County, Texas. I had initially thought the family
purchased her once they arrived in Bastrop County,
Texas but after reviewing the deed records for all of
the counties in Texas and finding nothing, I am
starting to think that she might have been purchased
after they left Greene County, IL (1835) and before
they arrived in Texas (1836).

My research have included interviews with the
descendents of the slaveholding family, tax, deeds,
probates, military and court records for Greene
County, IL, DeSoto Parish, LA, Bastrop and Red River
Counties, TX.

Just need suggestions on how to proceed with my
search.

I thank you in advance for your assistance.
