Goins of Belmont Co., OH and Albemarle Co., VA
It is approximately four years since I discovered--with the help of a wonderful woman in Belmont County-- the obituary of my great great great grandfather Michael A. Goins. According to the obituary, he was born in Virginia's Albemarle County. With the use of the 1880 Census schedule for Belmont County, Ohio and the obituary, I estimate he was born circa 1805 or 1806. Subsequently I discovered "A Just and True Account, Two 1833 Parish Censuses of Albemarle County Free Blacks " by Ervin L. Jordan. This article appeared in The Magazine of Albemarle County History in 1995 and gave me hope that I might find the birthplace of my great great great grandfather.
This evidence was the excuse I needed to visit Charlottesville in 2003 and 2005. When I was in this Central Virgina community, I followed up on the article which list several Goins'(with several variations) which gave me the strongest belief that Michael Goins came from this area. What is more, I discovered a record-- in an order or minute book-- which gave a description of a "Michael Goins" in Albemarle circa 1828 along with several male Goins'
This is where I hit the brick wall. I don't know how to go beyond these set of records to secure a concrete match. I have been to the State Library of Virginia in Richmond to examine their records. There are more Goins' but those particular records complicate the search insofar as they individuals where described as "Indian."
What to do next?
