I hesitated sending this to the forum because of the controversy over Hidden in Plan View. But just in case there are those that were willing to give her benefit of the doubt, I felt the subject of the Underground Railroad and the Canadian connection might be of interest.
At the risk of sounding naive or causing ire I admit I read HIPV several years ago and embraced the concept of the quilt codes, partially because my mother and grandmother (deceased) are/were quilters and used the patterns and codes in their quiltmaking. As a matter of fact, my first published piece was a story about a quilt my grandmother started when she was ill with Alzheimers and my mother later finished and in it I talked about what some of the patterns symbolized as told to me in oral history. I later read about the controversy and have since read some of the commentary on Afrigeneas and had to rethink things because I realize how important in genealogy and history to have the facts. I haven't read Ms. Foley's and H-Net's commentaries but plan to so I can understand this controversy better.
