Thanks for the article. I went to an NGS conference several years ago and one speaker said that many Southern people who were white started using intials in the 1870 census to protest the Government's intrusion into their lives and the changes that came with Reconstruction. Basically, by giving the Government as little info as possible, it was a small way to rebel. The speaker also said that you will see some women listed at that time as Mrs. Smith or Mrs. Fitgerald for the same reason, they didn't want to give the Government power over themselves when they had been used to being in charge for so long.
