alt: hello 3rdthawkins
3rdthawkins: hey alt still looking for my gr gm Mada Jefferson, I see a few possibilities, one in WV with father named James and mother named Dora. i'm looking into it because my grandmother's sister's name as Doris. I wouldn't know where Anna Roxianna would have come from and how it fits into it
alt: good work .. keep on plugging just have to put your folks in a time, place and context as Selma always tells us.
3rdthawkins: looks like I need to put my findings in a database, this is not the one, found her in 1930 still living with fam in WV. Those i can cancel out can got into a separate database
alt: okay, it is good to also know what folks DO NOT belong in your family lines. names, ages & locations can often throw you off and send you down the wrong path.
iChat: Good afternoon this day peeps
3rdthawkins: yeah it could.......hello ichat
alt: hello iChat.. are you a regular in disguise
iChat: Both lol
alt: regular & in disguise LOL
iChat: lol
3rdthawkins: someone who lives in NY
iChat: Any new research findings?
3rdthawkins: nope, still looking hey Selma
alt: Hello Selma, how ya hopping?
iChat: What is your assessment of Mocavo as a search tool?
3rdthawkins: what is Mocavo?
iChat: Good afternoon Selma
alt: just got of the phone with a young lady in Cleveland, OH researching her family in Piqua, Oh where I grew up.
Selma: Good afternoon folks..
iChat: Mocavo is a search engine exclusive to genealogy
Selma: Haven't really used...what do you thinkof it IChat
iChat: Alt were you able to assist the young lady?
alt: Selma, I sent you an email thanking you for your messages on RG105... not sure it went thru, my email is acting 'squirrely'
3rdthawkins: oh, I think you asked about that before, I think daviss commented on it also haven't been to it myself though
iChat: Well it brings many hits but all over the place so I find it confusing Selma. No idea of what the future might bring.
alt: iChat, we've opened a line of communication... emails w/info to follow.
Selma: Last thing I need is to add something that will add to my confusion..
iChat: lol @ Selma
Seventies Soulchild: good afternoon lunch bunchers! hi alt, 3rd, iChat, Selma
Selma: Afternoon seventies..
3rdthawkins: hello Seventies and AY
alt: right on Selma.. too much new 'stuff' coming on the 'Net.. every developer in the world is getting into the act LOL
AYWalton: Good afternoon, all. hi 3rd
iChat: Good afternoon Seventies
AYWalton: greetings, alt, iChat, Ms. Selma, hey SoulChile!
Seventies Soulchild: hi AYWalton...
AYWalton: Hope you are all doing well.
Selma: Afternoon Ay...
alt: Hello Seventies Soulchild & AYWalton .. hope you both are well
Selma: Gotta hop..and make myself a sandwich
iChat: Good afternoon AYWalton Doing well
Seventies Soulchild: lol Selma I heard from Renee Ingram about that common relative. She's looking into someone else's family tree. But still no word on how they are related.
iChat: AYWalton have you used Mocavo and how does it work for you if so?
Seventies Soulchild: brb'
AYWalton: I have only used it once or twice.
iChat: AYWalton have you used the Mocavo search engine and how does it work for you if so?
AYWalton: I can't even recall whether I liked it or not----sometimes too many new things appear and then there is New-Info-Overload. I think it was ok, t but I use Google most of the time. I feel a need to often get the most of what I have before grabbing something new.
iChat: oh ok I see that it has 2000 plus "likes" and that seems like a small number based on what it is designed to do. Just wondering
AYWalton: I think the fast pace of new internet options adds to ADD for folks. I don't like too many distractions when I am into my projects. If I jumped on them all, I would get nothing done.
Seventies Soulchild: So how do you like the Guinea-Bissau facebook page AYWalton?
AYWalton: Like I said, I used it once or twice, and I think it was ok, but it has not replaced my use of Google.
iChat: I do agree re the ADD .. too much too soon and not focused
3rdthawkins: me too, agree
AYWalton: it's ok, SoulChile, but I need to make some readjustments---to many notifications are coming to my email from the group. again---some overload there.
Seventies Soulchild: ah... I think that they should be a little more focused, IMO. Too much info on Cameroon.
iChat: Google is the champ. I must say that I am beginning to give much favor to Bing
Seventies Soulchild: I turned off the e-mail notifications for that group.
AYWalton: well many members are not genealogists.
Selma: Ok back..glad you heard from Ingram seventies..so the info is NOT something she posted
AYWalton: I suspect that for them the DNA has told them all they want to know. A real pitfall for DNA in my opinion.
3rdthawkins: IChat, what is Bing doing that Google is not, I tried Bing, but I get the same search results, maybe I am looking at the wrong thing
Seventies Soulchild: That's another issue. they are jumping right into Africa without the background research.
Selma: Seventies..for many folks that is exactly what they want
Seventies Soulchild: I agree AYWalton
AYWalton: true----many who have a void of embracing an identity that matters to them, find that this fills that void. Those of us researching our families, don't have that kind of emotional need.
alt: not DNA, but the misunderstanding of what it is and what the testing done tells you.
AYWalton: plus some are ready to go to Guinea-Bissau---not wise in my opinion.
3rdthawkins: I agree with all of you, it's more about "where I come from" the genealogy
Seventies Soulchild: Well DNA is different things to different people. \
3rdthawkins: the-then
iChat: Bing is new and has some features like "voice" that I was not familiar with in Google. It also has some relaxing, to me, scapes
Seventies Soulchild: I saw that AYWalton. they did that for the Cameroon group in 2009-2010. I think that they are trying to model this group after the Cameroonian group
AYWalton: That country is trying (slowly) to recover from a devastating Civil War. It not a country with an infrastructure to handle tourists. such trips without careful planning
Seventies Soulchild: Agree. Its in total shambles
alt: one or two ancestral lines for Y & mtDNA and all of a sudden this is who I am, what about those other ancestors?
AYWalton: can be dangerous.
3rdthawkins: "relaxing scapes" Ichat???
AYWalton: my husband just came back on Monday from Nigeria. he attended a funeral of the mother of a very close friend.
Seventies Soulchild: ok
AYWalton: Now he is FROM there----and the funeral was in Igarra---an 8 hour drive from Lagos. They had to have a police escort all the way to and from Lagos.
Seventies Soulchild: They seem to be having political issues over there agian. Was the mother from an important family?
AYWalton: Armed robbers and kidnappers are everywhere and unless you have money to pay for police escort---you are vulnerable in a poor country. and Nigeria is light years ahead of Guinea-Bissau. A poor country with much suffering.
3rdthawkins: that's why I will be happier to find my DNA connected to Ireland
iChat: Wow that must have cost a pretty penny AYWalton re escorts
AYWalton: that
Seventies Soulchild: excuse me???
AYWalton: that does not make a European country BETTER, 3rd.
3rdthawkins: no, but I'll still be happier
AYWalton: and there should be no JOY in finding the European more than the African.
3rdthawkins: why not?
Selma: Obviously it is for some folks
AYWalton: I am speaking to the poverty and suffering of the people and finding a European would give me no special joy.
Seventies Soulchild: It certainly does not. I had to pay a police bribe in Czech on my vacation... same thing happens in every poorer country.
alt: ireland, Huh? they're still fighting Britian.
3rdthawkins: yeah, and we will overcome!!!
AYWalton: that is like saying that they are better, and I HOPE that is not relief on your part as if that is something to be happier about than the African. That is not what SoulChile and I are speaking .
iChat: Is this offering from 23and me worth testing?
AYWalton: depends on what you want, iChat.
3rdthawkins: I'm just messing with y'all lol lol
alt: I sent in my request yesterday and received notice that they have shipped my package for testing
Seventies Soulchild: Well it's not funny, but d@mn offensive. So watch yourself.
AYWalton: thanks SoulChile, agreed.
3rdthawkins: well, black folks are sensitive
Seventies Soulchild: enough 3rd
iChat: Not sure AYWalton since the whole of DNA eludes me past the initial step
AYWalton: folks are indeed sensitive when someone suggests that something non-African is better than the African. We have to address that EVERYTIME it is uttered. iChat, the purpose of the 23 & me initiative is basically a health study.
3rdthawkins: I don't see whites getting upset when saying non African is better than African
AYWalton: they do throw in the Admixtures. I doubt if it is said TO them, 3rd.
3rdthawkins: ok, so African is better than Everything and Everybody
iChat: ok duh
AYWalton: but SoulChile is right----ENOUGH!!!!!!!!!
iChat: I agree nuff said
AYWalton: SoulChile are you testing with 23 and me? I wonder if they will mail to a non-MD address for a MD based person?
iChat: What is the advantage of 23 and me
Seventies Soulchild: No. I was reading on The GB page that now African Ancestry has an admixture test?
alt: I do, all of the time 3rdthawkins, whites seem to practice a 'knock the Negro' philosophy in all aspects of African Ancestored accomplishment.. right now it's about Tiger's caddie and not Tiger's accomplishments, for example.
Seventies Soulchild: I haven't had a chance to verify it on their page though.
AYWalton: some like it for the admixture results. The percentages.
3rdthawkins: but I would accept all heritages and nationalities in my tree equally, None is Better Than Any
AYWalton: SoulChile I have to go and check that out on the African Ancestry page.
Seventies Soulchild: I'm not sure if I want an admixture test for myself, though.
iChat: alt and what you say has ever been so.
Seventies Soulchild: I would really like to have my dad's side of the family tested.
3rdthawkins: yeah it is true alt, whites have kind of a love/hate relationship with blacks, they don't like blacks, but they have a fascination with blacks and the Black Way
AYWalton: It is not something that makes a revealing factor I think it might be interesting to satisfy curiosity, though.
Seventies Soulchild: I suspect that there is also Guinea blood and maybe some Malian ancestry.
3rdthawkins: I just get tired of talking about black and African all the time
AYWalton: Plus I have tested with FTDNA and AfricanAncestry. I will have my brother test with FTDNA, as I know his line will be very different as it is the paternal side.
alt: I don't understand that Seventies Soulchild, you want to know your geneal of, all of it, but not all of your genetic composition... Am I correct on that?
AYWalton: Soulchile do you see many with results from Mali? I have not seen too many.
Seventies Soulchild: I'm really more focused on my African ancestry alt. I haven't seen many at all AYWalton
alt: i had to do admixture to 'find' my black/african ancestry Y & mtDNA pointed me to Europe and BTW Ireland 3rdthawkins.
Seventies Soulchild: And I say that because my families from what I've been able to find out have a strong West African background. Seem to anyway.
AYWalton: that's true.
Seventies Soulchild: Additionally, I know so little about it I want to focus on that side more.
alt: so one 'needs' admixture to get beyond the 'direct' genetic DNA background.
AYWalton: that is interesting, alt.
iChat: and admixture means increasing costs ?
AYWalton: it is a different test.
Seventies Soulchild: brb
alt: could be, be not neccessarily iChat ..
AYWalton: and since 23 and me is promoting their need to have 10,000 black folks in their database, they will probably become THE VOICE in medical predisposition for diseases or .something like that
iChat: ahhhhhh so
AYWalton: their current drive is health---and they are including the admixture as an extra.
Selma: Ummmm
AYWalton: I think it is driven by Dr. Gates.
iChat: okay
AYWalton: he is the only non-scientist on their team.
alt: I'm surprised tha theey are still offering the free test after a 2-3 week offering, I would have thought that 10,000 folks would have 'snapped' the offer up by now.
AYWalton: Oops.
alt: wb AYWalton
iChat: alt to me DNA is almost totally grey
alt: well, I'm no expert iChat.
AYWalton: I kind of have an idea of what it reveals, which is why I choose some tests over others. plus the different companies deliver info in different ways.
Seventies Soulchild: AYWalton, I agree. I think they're doing to be in business competition and to get an edge in health research. I'm not going to use their service.
AYWalton: You might have a point there, SoulChile.
Seventies Soulchild: This is what I was trying to explain to the GB group...
AYWalton: I don't think enough folks have heard of it.
alt: As a biology major and ahving worked in the medical field while in the military my understanding may be just a 'tad' more than rudimentary.
iChat: try 2 tads alt lol
alt: okay iChat lol lol
AYWalton: it is interesting, no question. well I have to run, folks. Have a great day.
iChat: bye for now
alt: what kind of sandwich did we fix Selma?
Selma: Honey Ham
alt: yum, yum
Seventies Soulchild: with tomatoes, lettuce, pepper and vinegar? Yum!
iChat: on whole wheat or Rye Selma
alt: with tomato, mayo & lettuce
Seventies Soulchild: oh.
Selma: Whole wheat..just mayo and ham.. My neighbor dropped off some cucumbers from her garden..told her I was waiting for my tomatoes and Okra
Seventies Soulchild: lol
alt: that'll work for me Selma LOL
Selma: Well folks have to run..
alt: take care Hopalong
Selma: Khathu is in Phonenix.. He came to the chat last night Leaving tomorrow
alt: ah so
iChat: Hope he saw vicky
alt: that would have been nice iChat
Selma: He just arrived yesterday (quick trip)...I haven't seen or talked to her is her computer still down
alt: far as I know it is Selma
Seventies Soulchild: He told me he was going to contact her upon his arrival there.
iChat: I spoke with her briefly yesterday computer is still dowm
alt: she is 'alive & well' then iChat?
iChat: alive and well
Selma: Ok..now I really have to run...have a good day
iChat: An hour well spent
alt: who's gonna turn out the lights & straighten up the chairs?
Seventies Soulchild: oops not me! lol bye y'all... see you later this week!
iChat: Y'all take care
alt: bye
