Walter B. Hill

Walter B. Hill, Jr. is a Senior Archivist and Subject Area Specialist at the National Archives and Records Administration. He specializes in records relative to the documentation of African Americans in federal records. He has been with the National Archives and Records Administration since 1978, and has held a variety of archival positions.

He received his Ph.D. in American History from the University of Maryland, College Park, MD, under Ira Berlin, Professor of History. Since 1984 he has been an Adjunct Professor, Afro-American Studies Department at Howard University. He has held teaching positions at Northern Illinois University, St. Louis University, and the University of Maryland.

He has published articles in the area of archives and history with specific focus on Afro-American life, history, and culture. He has presented papers at archival and historical conferences, and taught workshops on archival research at the National Archives and Records Administration at numerous colleges and universities.

He has participated in several historical documentaries on African Americans, and has appeared on C-Spann, ABC Good Morning America, Fox-TV, WRC-TV, Washington Journal, and has been quoted on different historical subjects in numerous newspapers. He has served on the Executive Council of the Association for the Study of Afro-American History as board member and Vice President. He is the Chief Historian for the African American Civil War Memorial.
