Re: Chitto HARJO
In Response To: Re: Chitto HARJO ()

I’m a descendant of Silas, John Jefferson is my 4x grandfather. I’ve been researching and I’m stuck. I know that the roll numbers my late mom left are correct but I’m being told basically to use the freedmen roll number. Who can I reach out to to help me?

While I'm at it, I missed out on a couple of things..

In your relation to Silas, were any of the mothers in that relation the original applicant to the Dawes Rolls? Others can correct me here if I'm wrong, but as back then the enrollees went off of the bloodline of the father, not the mother, if the mother was native by blood and the father was a Freedman, the applicant was placed on the Freedmen Roll. So while Silas may be By Blood, if any of his daughters (assuming he had any) married a Freedman, and then tried to apply to the rolls for their children, the children would be placed on the Freedmen Roll along with the father (and quite possibly, the wife as well).

This is important, as when I do a quick search for your 4x grandfather, I see 6 entries: one for Creek by Blood, 4 for Creek Freedmen, and 1 Seminole by Blood. If the above regarding bloodlines are correct, you will then have to look at the packets (based off of the card number) and look at the interviews to see if the relations, ages, and events to your family's recollection match what is in the interview.
