Re: The 5 Civilized Tribes
In Response To: Slave Owners Named Bynum ()

I am looking to discover the truth of my Native American relatives. I heard from an elderly family member that we are Blackfoot and Creek-Cherokee belonging to the "Bird Tribe" There was a mentioning of different tribes. Are 5 civilized the ones that were run off the land in 1838 and forced to relocate to Oklahoma or are they the ones that united with the government and paid the required 5$ to become Indians and occupy the lands in Georgia, Tennessee, Alabama, North Carolina and Florida? I ask because our family member said some of us stayed so how do we know to which tribe we belong? He ranted that if they did an DNA test, not many would pass as Native Americans and, that soon, the DNA test will not be used because, all of the ones not belonging would have to give up the stolen land to the rightful owners...us. He died a couple of months ago, I really wished I had learned or showed more interest in my heritage... we never know do we? Please point me in the right direction, I am listening now.
