Mixed Bloods in the Five Civilized Tribes
As always in the tribes, mixed bloods were considered freedmen and not by bloods, based upon the fact that the mother was a slave, regardless of the father being an Indian.
History cannot change the culture of the tribes during the Dawes period. Whichever roll an applicant applied for was the roll the applicant was placed on and no transfers later was allowed. Always documents were used to support why an applicant was placed on a roll whether freedmen roll or by blood roll.
What I would like to know is how the tribes (Creek and Chickasaw/Choctaw) determined the amount of acres given to each family, 40 acres or 160 acres? Any comments?
