Re: Shoe Boots - Does anyone have history of this

Hello, you asked:

Angela, how does one get birth records before states kept them? In Indian Territory, how does one get marriage records and birth records? The states of interest are Tennessee, Oklahoma (pre-1906,7) and Texas, Red River area, Nagodoches and northeastern near the Coushatta? I've tried researching online but oftentimes, nothing is transcribed by volunteers. I'm wondering how the court houses will handle the request if it's so very early. Any idea of when such records began to be kept?

As a genealogist it is important to find out what the resources are, in the various states that you are researching.

In Indian Territory many researchers often discover birth affidavits in Application jackets that accompany Dawes records. However, there was no mandatory requirement to record births. Such information was often kept in family records---the family Bible often being the most common place where important events were often recorded.

In the state of Tennessee, birth records were recorded regularly from 1914 onward. In some of the major cities records between 1881-1913 are also found, but not statewide.

In the state of Texas statewide registration began in 1903. There are some indexes available for births after 1903

Your first question---how does one get birth records before the states kept them. The official records did not exist until the 20th century---however, the first step of all genealogy is to employ oral history of all available elders and looking for corroborating evidence in other records. The challenge to find documents before they were officially taken is a real challenge. It is also important to realize that the real task is to learn the information and find supporting evidence that also confirms what you find.

The task is not an easy one, but you may still be able to find the information that you seek, by other means.

You are also encouraged to connect with other genealogists. There is a strong body of genealogists on the AfriGeneas main forum, many of whom are Texas researchers. There is a strong network of genealogists who are actgive in AAHGS the largest and oldest African American genealogical organization. There are also very useful historical societies and you are encouraged to consider joining the historical society that pertains to the community where you ancestors lived.

Hopefully you will find the data that you seek and will find others who will also assist you in the process.
