Hello Stephanie Broussard,
Thank you for the info. My theory is that he was left with relatives around twelve years old to gain apprentice skills in farming. Those relatives took him to Illinois to help homestead around 1810 near a civilian fort known as Fort Allison. Sometime during the War of 1812 Fort Allison was attacked by Native American mercenaries fighting on behalf of the British and a "Colored" man named Anderson was killed. It is my theory that this is the source of the "parents killed in a raid story." There are several circumstantial factors that lend to Ezekiel Anderson, buried in Cass County, Michigan, 1850, and once known as Ezekiel Cole, as being the biological child of John Charles Cole and Cuzzy Anderson. However I think the key to this mystery is in learning as much as possible about Cuzzy Anderson, Who her relatives were? Where was she between 1800 and 1810 when she most likely left her two sons with relatives. If you could ask your family sources these questions I would greatly appreciate it.
