Candidate Silas JEFFERSON

Paper: The Inter Ocean
Date: 1879-09-04
Headline: Indian Territory; Kachu Emathia; Principle Chief; Silas Jefferson.

The [Muskokee] of Indian Territory recently held their national convention, or council, to nominate officers and adopt a declaration of principles. The Loyal party nominated Kachu [Emathla], [Principal] Chief, and Silas Jefferson for Second Chief. In the course of their platform they say:

Whereas. In the course of events it becomes necessary for us, the Loyal people, to organize a just and honest government for our protection, and to that end to elect officers to execute and make wholesome and impartial laws.

Resolved. That we, the Loyal [Muskoges], declare as our unanimous choice for Principal Chief, Kachu Emathla, and for Second Chief, Silas Jefferson.

Resolved. That we firmly believe that all citizens of the [Muskoke] Nation, Loyal, Confederate, and the Emancipated men should have equal and impartial justice and enjoy all the rights provided for by our treaties, and they should be observed and obeyed to the letter and spirit.

Resolved. We believe and know from experience of eighteen years that the republican form of government is the only one capable of defending the rights of man, regardless of race, creed, or previous condition of slavery.

Resolved. That at elections no threats, intimidations, or bribes shall be used or attempted, but by an impartial majority the opposite shall be sternly suppressed.

FYI
