Re: Anderson & Shepherd Cole Application

Hello Val, Preston, Allen....all *waves* Please allow me to introduce myself firsthand: I am Laurie from nr. Cincy, OH and I have dilligently researched my maternal lineage for over just 3 years now...my maternal surnames are primarilly comprised of: Nichols, Cole, Gibson, Collins & Perkins...I regularly visit and post at several forums including the forum at Saponitown...this is how I first came to be onlien acquainted with Val...she posted a queary about her ancestor Ezekial (Cole) Anderson and I immediately "knew" who she was referring to and told her what I knew about this fellow's lineage...you can read the forum exchanges at the following URL:
http://www.saponitown.com/forum/showthread.php?t=2942&highlight=ezekial+anderson

I posted what I knew tell of the John Charles, called "Jack" Cole & Cuzzie nee Anderson lines and also posted my transcribed copies of the Eastern Cherokee Applications. I have very little to no doubt that Val's Ezekial Anderson is in fact one and the same as Ezekial Cole aka: Ezekial (Cole) Anderson...I base this on numerous things: 1. the ECA's indicate that Ezekial was a sibling listed in the ECA's
2. by dates, Ezekial "fits" into this family
3. by marital choice, he having MD into teh Goins family is fitting, as many of my maternal ancestors did marry into like-name families for many generations
4. Migratorilly, he , as did countless others left for more Southern venues.
5. By assumed surname: Anderson, he affiliated himself with his maternal family's surname...as did his brother William...whom we refer to as Billy Anderson Cole...who, when HE filed his ECA, he was listed as Anderson Cole...which lends to the reality too, that tribally speaking, any child of a Native American mother did assume his mother's tribal identity and oft times also assumed her family surname...this was customary and usual especially so for ppl of Cherokee descent....as an example: if a mother as say Cherokee and she MD a Choctaw man...her children by birthright and tribal custom would be considered Cherokee, the same as their mother...irreguardless of their father's tribal affiliation.
6. The Cole family, specifically, amongst my maternal researchings, are very highly documented as beign of Cherokee and other NA ancestry...some "removed"....others did not but a vast majority, as mentioned previously did leave the south for more Northern venues...we have many kinfolk in OH and MI and more out west as well...some too, remain in KY and TN and VA and NC. There are just scads of Cole family members who did file ECA's.

I do not agree with the contention that Ezekial was orphaned beause of a Indian Raid that killed his entire family....that is factually discredited when you look at the death dates of hsi family members: his father John Charles "Jack" Cole d: 1862 in Lawrence Co, KY....Cuzzie, his mother in 1833 in KY....his brother Jackson, also called "Jack" in 1864 in Magoffin Co, KY...Ole Billy Anderson Cole in 1885 in Magoffin....family "tales" are oft times just that...tales...embellishment fo facts...my family is no exception...we have not been spared that greeting either. Nor do I agree with the Trail of Tears tale....historically by dates and location, it is off the mark...so excuse that tale and move on if you will. Additionally, the idea that he was STOLLEN by an Anderson man immediately begs me to ask: gee, if hsi MOTHER was an Anderson...maybe everyone shoudl examine this Anderson family he resided with (assumign he did) and see if perhaps they are in fact related to his mother's line! Countless kinfold were "raised up" and removed with kinfolk from here or there...and countless others still, before and hence, assumed another family surname...I have seen Nichosl become Gibsons...Gibsons become Fergusons....Wisecups becoem Nichols...Perkins become Barnetts...Nichosl become Murphy's...for whatever reasons (and I am certain there are many) soem ppl...many ppl...did assume a different surname or given name from time thru our ancestry. Yes...they are exceedingly difficult to trace when they did so, but truly....take great solace in now knowing what you do know...and by all means, run with that! Look to others to assist you about this family....try and prove that it is they that are your long ago lost kinfolk...defy the parameters of stumbling blocks and reach out and ASK....if every person who knows even a tidbit woudl just TOSS that morsel...eventually, the puzzle will come together fully, nicely and concisely. There are numerous Yahoo and MSN and myfamily.com and other forums...Rootsweb, genforum...just gobs of em...google every name...and turn over every leaf...this lien of Cole's is VERY respectably documented...sit beside all of us and delve deeper and learn plenty and share moreso! My files are an open-book for everyone...I am no research genius...heck, I'm really very NEW at this, but boy I've gleened plenty with soooo much love and help from others...Richard Carlson's dissertation still to this day feeds me regularly...always with soem enrichment and gem...Irene Cole Farmer is , in my mind, and that of soooo many others, the PREMIERRE Cole researcher...God bless her kind heart...I love her as a cousin and as a human...Janice LeFountain si a GEM...she is soooo very educated on these lines too...by all means folks...go with the team and contact them and others...email, snail mail...or ask permission and phone...and as a final rambling thought: PLEASE source and document every single morsel, every link, every posting, everything...and share it all...be an open book...what oen person missed and thinks may be completely irrelevant...another will see or hear or read and a HUGE "lightbulb" can light right up and a VWALAH!...a whoel big plethora will greet you. Blessings to all from here to there....welcome to the "family fold"...I look forward to more fully examining this line with all of you. Best regards~~~Laurie
