the owning of slaves regardless of folk was something of strategy and survival. the african tribes that sold & held rival or neighboring tribal members was prevalent all over the continent as it was in north america. enter: europeans with shiny gold and promises in return for stock. happened in both places, right. they gave africans beads, gold, fabrics, currency, etc... and with that money they could build their villages and community. or as in america, that stock was different on different soil with different landowners. holding slaves for some tribes was a matter of survival. if they could quasi-assimilate and show the europeans that they could be like them, maybe they could hold on to their lands. didn't work. i know.
