Re: Sad day for freedmen
In Response To: Sad day for freedmen ()
A Sad day? - Actually - on the surface...yes....As a Cherokee citizen whose ancestors were on the Cherokee Freedmen roll, I voted by absentee ballot "NO"..... Obviously, I am not pleased with the final vote, but I am also not surprised....
But in other ways.....People who had never heard of the Freedmen of the Five Civilized tribes.....nor of who the Cherokee Freedmen are...have been talking about the issue...I have seen the story was carried on the BBC website, an Australian website and in quite a few newspapers in the country.....It made front page news here in the Washington D.C. area in the Washington Post.
If anything..the American Public is better educated.... For example, have you read the letters to the editor that the newspapers have been receiving. For the most part they have been favorable to the freedmen case for citizenship....I only wish that the articles had come out one week before the election and not the day before.....
