Re: Where to Begin
In Response To: Where to Begin ()

Hi Lee:

My research indicates that several citizens (and ancestors) of the "5-Civilized Tribes" have connections to folk in Conway, Arkansas; as I've assisted some of them reconnect with lost family members.

Keep in mind, that family history (esp. IT history) is NOT WRITTEN IN STONE.

For example, most academic works failed to acknowledge that there were at least (7) different groups (for lack of a better word) of people in IT (Indian Territory) of w/ African blood, before the Civil War (which would pre-date the "Treaties" of 1866):

1. Born Free in IT
2. Born Free bef. the "Removal" (in the "Old Nations")
3. Never enslaved bef. "Removal"
4. Emancipated bef. the "Removal"
5. Emancipated in IT
6. Bought in Route (during the "Removal")
7. Bought bef. "Removal"
8. Bought after "Removal"*

*Major slave markets were in LA, AR, TN, & MO (to name a few)

Historical documentation hasn't even begun to scratch the surface regarding these "groups," AND that includes the FINAL "Treaties" of 1866.
Pls. do not be discouraged and continue to research your families history.

Blessings,

~Laurel
