Good question/poll BJ.
I have 3 sets of great grandparents who were slaves - 2 sets (maternal line)in Loudoun VA, one set in TN (paternal line). The 4th set were not, they were white farmers in KS - non-slaveholders.
I did not get to meet any of them since they had all died by the time I was born in 1947 - but my mother did. So slavery was not a distant memory in our family.
I was discussing this very issue with a guest last week. She is from Brazil, and is my age; since slavery didn't end there until 1888 she actually knew former slaves from her own family, and interviewed many other former slaves in her work as an anthropologist.
There is an interesting year 2000 BBC article about a former slave dying at the age of 129 in Brazil (see link below).
