Thomas & Lawrence...Edgecombe Co. North Carolina
My grandparents, George Thomas and Flora Lawrence were both born enslaved. George Thomas in Virginia, 16 May 1852 and Flora Lawrence in North Carolina, 2 Mar 1853. I’ve located both in the 1880 Census for Edgecombe County, with DIFFERENT spouses. I’ve also found them in the 1870 Edgecombe County Census and I believe the 1860 Slave Schedules for Edgecombe County. They are located in Greencastle, Putnam County, IN on the 1900, 1910 & 1920 Census records as husband and wife.
1860 Slave Schedule…we find a slave owner, Jas. W. Thomas with 9 slaves, two males who in 1860 match the ages of George (7) & John Thomas (13) found on the 1870 Census, ages 19 & 26 respectively, with a birth location of Virginia, I believe two of the males on the 1860 Census to be George and JohnThomas.
1860 Slave Schedule….we find a slave owner, Henry Lawrence with 12 slaves, ages and sex match for
In 1880 George Thomas (27) is married to a Lucy (25), with 5 children, Martha (10), George (7), Penny, female (6), Louisa (4) and Lucy (1). Flora Lawrence (26) is married to a Lafayette Dickens (25) and has one child, B. Louis (9 mos.).
By the 1890’s George and Flora have migrated to Greencastle, in Putnam County, IN. Flora has had 5 additional children by Layfayette Dickens, Ken???, b 8 Apr 1881, Louisa, b 16 Apr 1882, Kelm??, b 10 Jun 1884, Mary Eliz., b 16 Sep 1887 and Henry L. b Jul 1889. I have no idea what happened to George’s family with Lucy.
On 4 Mar 1892 in Greencastle, IN George & Flora are united in marriage and they have three (3) children. James Arthur, b 31 Oct 1892, Walter William,( my father), b 18 Mar 1894 and Josephine, b 29 May 1896. Josephine died in infancy.
I’m trying to connect with any Thomas’, Lawrence’s and Dickens’ with North Carolina and or Indiana roots. Please excuse the length of this message, I tried to shorten it, but couldn’t seem to do it.
I have additional information to share if there is a connection.
Thanks for listening,
