Re: Generations from Slavery ?
In Response To: Re: Generations from Slavery ? ()
I am a Aussie. I look caucasian, pale as a ghost to be honest, so it was very much to my surprise that upon researching my ancestry, it turns out, and I am proud to say it, that six generations ago my grandmother Betsey was a African slave in Demerara now known as Guyana in South America, I guess back then part of the West Indies. She had two children called John and Eliza Jennings with her owner, my 6th generation grandfather Richard Downing Jennings. On Richard's death, Eliza and John were sent to Scotland to live with Richard's sister, their Aunt Anna Jennings Murray. Eliza eventually met my 5th generation grandfather William Grant and they emigrated to Australia. Legend has it Eliza was known to be a fantastic nurse and mid wife that would ride through floods around Walls End in New South Wales to help the stricken. She is buried there. Our family is very proud of her. Messages In This Thread
